Welcome to my blog! I’m excited to share my journey with you—a journey that weaves through the vibrant culture of South Africa, the disciplined world of ballet, and the inspiring realms of faith and art.
My life has been a tapestry of challenges and triumphs, all of which have shaped the artist I am today.
My biggest goal for 2024 was to take a six-month hiatus from social media to find my true voice and to recenter myself with who I am and why I create. It has taken 5 months for me to finally have the breakthrough I was looking for, and I wanted to share what I discovered.
I invite you to join me as I explore how these unique experiences have not only influenced my art but also provided me with a profound sense of purpose and healing.
Growing Up in South Africa: The Beginning of My Dance with Art
Growing up in South Africa, my life was a dance of perseverance and passion. From the tender age of three, I immersed myself in ballet, finding solace and expression through movement. Ballet was more than a hobby; it was a lifeline, especially in a household that faced financial struggles as many others also during this time. As the oldest of two siblings, I took on responsibilities early, working as a waiter at sixteen to afford my dance classes. This taught me resilience and the importance of following my dreams, no matter the obstacles.
A Year of Transformation: Building Faith and Finding Purpose
After two decades of ballet, I felt a calling that transcended the dance studio. I took a year for camping and hiking, being surrounded by nature seeking to build my faith and grow closer to God. This period of introspection and connection with nature was transformative. It was during a church service, amidst the powerful energy of praise and worship, that I received a vision to study art. This vision ignited a new passion within me, leading me to enroll in art school.
Love, Faith, and a Leap of Faith: My Journey to Norway
University was not just a place of learning; it was where I met my husband. Together, we shared dreams of a future filled with creativity, growth and faith. However, midway through my art studies, I felt another divine nudge. God was telling me to avoid further debt, and with a heavy heart, I left my studies behind. This decision, while difficult, paved the way for new adventures. We moved to Norway, seeking a safer and more promising future for our children.
Isolation and Inspiration: Turning Challenges into Art
The transition to Norway was challenging. The isolation during COVID-19, coupled with the harsh weather and lack of sunshine, took a toll on my mental health. I began to slip into depression, especially after I fell pregnant with my daughter. Yet, amidst these struggles, I found a lifeline in painting. Art became my creative outlet, helping me keep my mind occupied and preventing me from drowning in my thoughts.
Painting My Way to Peace: The Healing Power of Art
As I developed anxiety issues, I realised that painting regularly helped soothe my mind. Each brushstroke was a step towards healing, each colour a reflection of hope.
My art became a testament to my journey, blending my South African roots, my love for ballet, and my unwavering faith.
Moving Forward: Embracing My Journey and Inspiring Others
My journey from ballet shoes to paintbrushes has been anything but ordinary. It's a testament to the power of faith, resilience, and the healing power of art. By sharing my story, I hope to inspire others to find solace and expression in their own creative pursuits.
Thank you for joining me on this journey. I invite you to explore my art, connect with me on social media, and perhaps find a piece of your own story reflected in my work.
Love
Janine
